People ask all the time what actually happens between “I’d love a custom table” and the day it lands in their dining room. Fair question. When you buy from a store, the process is invisible. When you buy from us, you’re welcome to watch every step.
So here it is, the whole thing, using a recent walnut build as the example.
It starts with a conversation, not a slab
Before we touch any wood, we talk. How many people sit at your table on a normal night? On Thanksgiving? Is this a formal room or the spot where homework happens? Those answers shape the size, the height, the base, and even the finish.
By the end of that first conversation, we have a plan: the species, the rough dimensions, the look you’re going for, and an honest quote.
Choosing the wood
All of our slabs are sourced locally, and this is everyone’s favorite step. You can come to the Yelm shop and look through the options in person. Grain, color, character marks, every slab is different, and the right one tends to pick you.
The slab most people walk past is usually the one with the best story in it.
Milling, flattening, and the slow parts
This is the unglamorous middle of every build, and it’s where quality is decided. The slab gets flattened dead level, moisture is checked so the wood is fully ready to live indoors, and any cracks or voids get stabilized. If the design calls for epoxy, this is when it’s poured and cured.
Finishing: where a table becomes an heirloom
Sanding runs through progressively finer grits until the surface feels like glass. Then comes your chosen finish, natural or stained, matte or gloss, applied in coats with cure time in between. We don’t rush this step, because the finish is what your family will actually touch every day for the next few decades.
Delivery day
Pick it up at the shop or we’ll bring it to you anywhere in the South Sound. We set it in place, level it, and walk you through simple care for your specific finish. Then it starts doing its real job: holding dinners, homework, board games, and everything else.
